The 5 Ws of Effective Messaging

The Business Builder Volume 3 Issue 8

I ran across this great reminder while watching a talk by legendary direct response man, Drayton Bird.

Drayton said that whenever someone asked him to solve an “unsolvable problem” (related to advertising), he always fell back on the 5Ws framework:

  1. Who are you talking to?

  2. What do you want them to do?

  3. Where will you reach them?

  4. When should you talk to them?

  5. Why should they do what you want them to do?

The next time you are working on your marketing, sales, or any other persuasive communication, take a beat and consider the 5Ws. You’ll be glad you did.

Hope that helps. Enjoy this week’s picks.

Work Ethic vs Discipline

A solid work ethic drives someone to show up, even when they’d rather not. If there’s work on their desk, they’ll take it on.

Discipline, on the other hand, is the ability to say ‘no’ to free up focus and resources for the work that’s worth saying ‘yes’ to.
