Old is New, TP Lessons, & Racoon Invasion

The Business Builder Vol 2 Issue 20

Remember that “Dots” section of my notebook?

Here’s another trend I’ve been noticing lately. Several prominent marketers are addressing current challenges in digital marketing by looking back to “old school” marketing and advertising.

2 quick examples…

Rand Fishkin, founder of Moz and SparkToro, has talked about this several times in relation to the problems with attribution and “hard-to-measure marketing channels.”

Yesterday, I attended a webinar with Digital Marketer's co-founder Ryan Deiss. He talked about how lead-gen advertising wasn’t working anymore. The ability to succeed (particularly on Facebook) merely by selecting a hyper-specific audience is no longer possible.

How did they solve this problem? By studying famous advertisers from the past, like Olgilvy, Hopkins, and Schwartz. By doing so, they “discovered” that one of the biggest keys to making their lead-gen ads work is messaging.

Friend and subscriber Glenn (hey Glenn!) and I often joke about how “what’s old is new again” in marketing. It’s a great reminder that the fundamentals never go out of style.
