No Mutual Mystification
That’s a rule I learned from my Sandler sales trainer.
Mutual mystification happens when we only hear what we want to hear. I’ve also heard it described as “happy ears.”
The cure is digging deeper to understand exactly what was agreed to (if anything) and what the next steps are.
I fell into the mutual mystification trap earlier this week.
Someone reached out to connect with me on LinkedIn. I thought he wanted to network. He wanted to know if I was a prospect for his services.
Initially, I thought he should have been more clear about his intentions. In reality, I should have taken responsibility and asked for more specifics on how I could help him “build his network.”
Clear messaging and being upfront with our goals would have saved us both a lot of time.
Has mutual mystification snared you? How do you guard against it?
