Jack and the Boring Sales Pitch

The Business Builder Volume 3 Issue 17

Once upon a time, there was a poor boy named Jack who lived with his mother in a cottage at the edge of town. Times were hard, and their only possession of value was an old cow named Bessie.

"Jack," said his mother one morning, "we must sell Bessie at the market. We need the money to buy food."

So Jack set off down the road, leading Bessie by her rope. Halfway to market, he encountered a peculiar man in a business suit carrying a briefcase.

"Good morning, young man," the stranger said, adjusting his tie. "I couldn't help but notice your bovine asset. I represent a leading agricultural solutions company, and I'd like to present you with a value proposition regarding our proprietary legume-based growth enhancement products."

Jack blinked. "I'm sorry, what?"

The man cleared his throat and pulled out a PowerPoint presentation on his tablet. "Allow me to articulate our comprehensive service offering. We provide premium seed commodities with exponential yield potential, leveraging cutting-edge horticultural methodologies to maximize your return on investment through vertical growing opportunities."

Jack scratched his head. "Are you trying to sell me something?"

"Indeed! Our featured product line consists of five premium leguminous specimens—what we call our 'Magic Growth Solution Bundle'—which, when properly deployed using our proprietary planting protocols, demonstrate remarkable upward trajectory potential with minimal ground-level footprint requirements."

"I... still don't understand what you're talking about," Jack said.

The salesman launched into a detailed features presentation: "Each individual unit in our bundle contains concentrated growth acceleration properties. Our independent laboratory testing shows optimal performance metrics when subjected to standard moisture application procedures. The vertical expansion capabilities are truly best-in-class, with some installations reaching heights of up to 500 feet, providing users with access to previously untapped altitude-based opportunities."

Jack yawned. "This sounds complicated. And frankly, a bit unbelievable."

"I assure you, our growth solutions are fully compliant with all industry standards. We've implemented robust quality assurance protocols and our customer satisfaction metrics are…"

"Look, mister," Jack interrupted, "I just need to sell my cow and buy some food. I don't have time for this." He tugged Bessie's rope and continued toward the market.

The salesman called after him: "But wait! I'm prepared to offer you a competitive trade opportunity! Your bovine asset in exchange for our complete five-bean solution package! Think of the scalability!"

Jack waved without turning around. "Not interested!"

And so Jack sold Bessie at the market for five gold coins, bought groceries for his mother, and they lived modestly but happily ever after.

The salesman, meanwhile, went home with his five magic beans still in his briefcase, wondering why his conversion rates were so low.

The Moral: You can have the most magical product in the world, but if you can't explain it in terms your customer cares about, you'll never make the sale.
